Learning Futures Social Collaborative and Performance Support From the Director’s Desk – Matt Murphy, Director of Content Management and Development for 4D provides insight into learning trends, directions and futures regarding the consumption of content. What is the goal of providing a learning event or activity such as our video content or attending AU? To learn new skills? Work more effi ciently? Network with others over a beer at the AUGI Beer Bust? All these activities point users toward improved productivity. I’m packing my bags for AU, having just unpacked after attending the Masie Learning 2015 Conference in Orlando. For me the Masie Conference is always an opportunity to refresh and rejuvenate our content design and to check the pulse for trends in learning. Here are highlights of the current upward and downward trends in learning. Moving up: 1. Personalization. Training organizations and groups are realizing that we can no longer dictate how, when and where people learn. Consumers are tuned in to what they want to learn, including custom playlists, remedial content and smart systems that make recommendations based on consumers’ prior knowledge, skills and searches. Learning content is rapidly moving away from the “all-you- can-eat” cable TV model to the “Netfl ix” streaming service model. Get what you need and get back to work! One size fi ts one! 2. Social Collaborative. We are social beings. The role of classroom trainers and instructors is shifting to moderators, mentors and facilitators of collaboration, since learning does not occur in a vacuum or only with online classes. AU provides social collaboration through roundtable sessions and the opportunity to connect with others. 3. Performance Support. Historically, learning happened away from the work environment and usually involved courses, classes and books. Now we are moving towards a model that supports learning in an authentic context, focused on solving real business problems. 8 www.cadlearning.com
